Every year we try to start off the New Year by making resolutions that we hope to accomplish in the year to come. Usually when we hear “New Year’s Resolutions,” we think to lose weight, eat healthier and get more sleep. And while those are great goals, we came up with a few that will not only improve your life but possibly your insurance expenses as well.

Walk More

Going on walks is a great way to improve cardiovascular health and is an excellent way to stay in touch with your neighbors and community. Since walking is such a relatively easy method of exercise, it can be effective for millions of Americans. Many individuals do not participate in gym memberships, but there are several other simple ways to increase the walking exercise in your daily life. For example, choosing stairs over the elevator, as well as just taking a walk around your block can increase your exercise range and improve your quality of life. The more healthy habits you create and maintain, the lower some types of life insurance rates could be.

Start an Emergency Fund

Starting and maintaining an emergency fund can be an enormous peace of mind for people worried about life’s uncertainties. Car or home repairs, loss of job, unexpected medical bills, deductiblesthe list goes on. Most people don’t have enough money saved for these types of unexpected problems, so it is smart to set aside a little out of every paycheck in a separate account for emergencies.

Save Energy

Reducing energy usage can be a cost effective method to lowering your monthly electric bill as well as reducing your ecological footprint on the environment. There have been great advancements in energy efficient LED bulbs in the last few years, and using these can lower energy usage. An increased vigilance to lighting usage, or turning the lights off when you’re not utilizing them, is another good method. If available, a clothesline can eliminate significant dryer energy usage as well.

Drive Slower

Make the time to get where you are going! The faster you drive, the more dangerous it is. It’s safer not only for you but also for those around you if you drive at or below the posted speed limits. You could also save some serious cash when it comes to your auto insurance. Speeding tickets can cause auto insurance rates to rise and with too many violations you won’t be eligible for those good driver discounts!
